The Post-Edenic Eroticism of the Institution of Narrative Cinema |Master's Thesis | The Ohio State University | 1984

The origin document. Written at the height of cinesemiotics and psychoanalytic film theory, this thesis argued that cinema's eroticism is not incidental but structural — that pleasure, confession, and desire are the institution's operating system. Drawing on Foucault, Metz, Lacan, and Mulvey, it mapped how spectator subjectivity is constituted through a sensory and libidinal apparatus. The questions it posed about how institutions deploy the sensorium to produce subjects — and how individuals might reclaim that terrain — remain perennial preoccupations.
